Our Mission:

Stephen T. Mather Building Arts and Craftsmanship High School, located in midtown Manhattan, is a Career and Technical Education (CTE) high school dedicated to preparing a diverse group of students for careers, college and citizenship through hands-on exploration and training in preservation-based carpentry, masonry, decorative finishing, and landscape stewardship.  Leveraging an innovative partnership with the National Park Service (NPS), our school, which opened in 2013 and graduated its first senior class in June 2017, offers specialized education in these trades while also providing students with a solid college preparatory foundation aligned with state and national standards.   

 

Enrollment:

Mather HS serves 384 students in grades 9-12 who come from all five boroughs of New York City; 65% Hispanic,       26% Black, 3% Asian, 4% White.  62% of students are male and 38% are female.  24% of our student population receives Special Education services.  A Title 1 school, all Mather students qualify for free and reduced lunch.              

 

Class Ranks:

The Class of 2024 has 72 seniors and a weighted rank will be provided where asked.  Students receive one annualized grade per course in June 2024.  A class with a passing mark is awarded 2 course credits; representing one full year of academic coursework.   

 

Mather uses mastery-based grading where skills are assessed and students are awarded a 1-4 grade demonstrating their mastery of Common Core standards.  On their transcript this score is converted to a 100-point GPA.  All students are subject to the Regents requirements of the New York State Education Department (NYSED) resulting in graduation with a Regents Diploma or Advanced Regents Diploma. 

 

A.P. Classes:

AP courses are offered and are weighted in calculating GPA.  These courses are: World History, U.S. History, Government, Statistics, Environmental Science, English Language, English Literature, Spanish Language*

*Mather HS offers one year of foreign language; students choose Spanish 1 or AP Spanish.

 

COVID-19:

NYS Regents Exams were cancelled in June 2020, January 2021, June 2021 and January 2022.  All students received a passing exam credit for each corresponding Regents course.  These exams are marked WA (waiver) on their transcript.
